It's either the best or worst-kept secret in the south: has the new Alien film landed?

Talk has swirled for weeks whether parts of the upcoming Alien: Covenant will be filmed in Fiordland. The mystery deepened on Monday, when several trucks were photographed in Te Anau near the Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park's Matai Lodge.

One of the trucks had the words "office" and "Prometheus" written on the side.

Prometheus is the name of the predecessor to Alien: Covenant.

Also on the truck was the name of Auckland-based rental company North Harbour Rentals.

A company spokesman said on Tuesday the trucks were for the Prometheus sequel.

"It's the Alien: Covenant film," the man said.

"They've just come over to do eight days. It's a lot more scenery I think."

It is understood Woz Productions Ltd which is owned by Fox Filmed Entertainment Australia, a part of the company behind Alien: Covenant, 20th Century Fox had rented out 11 trucks for filming around Milford Sound, with two more due to head to the area from Auckland.
