Residents of Stanley in Tasmania's north-west are discussing ways to cash in on the buzz surrounding a Hollywood drama filmed in their town.

The cast and crew of The Light Between Oceans have finished a week of filming.

The Dreamworks production staring Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz is due to hit cinemas late next year.

But in the meantime, locals are keen to keep the town's makeover for as long as possible.

Tourists are already rolling in to see what the fuss is about.

Bernard Atkins' chemist shop was taken back in time for the 1920s drama and he plans to keep the new look as a tourist attraction.

"So people can drive in and say 'that's 8 Church Street where a lot of the filming was done' and we're going to put little plaques around the town that tell people where a lot of the stuff was done," he said.

"We've got two major meetings come up, a tourism one and a chamber one, to discuss how we can have a spin-off on this."

The film's location manager Phillip Roope said the crew declared it a perfect location.

"They were just overwhelmed by the beauty and [old volcanic plug] the Nut and just the drama of Stanley."

They were also impressed by the town's spectacular scenery and warm hospitality.

"I've worked in a lot of places doing locations and I just think the people of this district are absolutely exceptional," he said.

"Many, many people have contributed things like wagons and expertise and with streets being laid with gravel, a lot of people have put up with a lot but they've handled it with amazing generosity."

Most of the action was in the town's main street and some scenes were filmed at the wharf.

Locals were in the thick of it, with more than 200 extras enjoying the glare of the spotlight.

"We were there for 12 hours standing around in the one spot pretending to be drinking a beer under the pub verandah," said extra Graeme Wells.

Maxine Wells also enjoyed the experience.

"All our friends coming out dressed with wigs and new hairdos and hair extensions, and very period clothes from the 1920s - it was exciting."

After filming for up to 20 hours a day, the "A-listers" unwound at the local pub.

"Jack Thompson featured on the mouth organ with the local band for a couple of hours," said publican Julian Jacobs.

"Michael Fassbender was here most of the night playing pool and mixing with the locals."

Mr Roope expects the town will be firmly on the tourist route.

"It's a big wide release so I think once people see this place around the world with the Nut they'll say 'goodness gracious, where was that?'"

The film is expected to be released in September.
