All furniture - even fire extinguishers - have been removed from Ely Cathedral's Lady Chapel for the filming of Macbeth, according to an insider.

The insider, who did not want to be named, said that the Lady Chapel is being made to look as "authentic as possible" for the filming, which is expected to start on Thursday.

As previously reported, banquet scenes for the hugely-anticipated new adaptation of the William Shakespeare tragedy are being shot there.

The film stars Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender and actress Marion Cotillard, and according to the Casting Network Ltd, the Surrey-based firm appointed to recruit extras for the film, Fassbender will definitely be at the cathedral and it is "highly likely" Cotillard will be too.

Filming is expected to continue until Saturday.

Speaking to Ely News on Monday, the insider said: "We started to clear things for filming on Sunday night and we're going to be putting everything back again this coming Saturday night in order for services to resume at the cathedral.

"All furniture inside the Lady Chapel has been cleared - even the fire extinguishers - as the cathedral is having to make it as authentic as possible, bearing in mind the film is set in medieval times.

"Obviously everyone is pretty excited about the filming but I don't think there is as much hype as when Jupiter Ascending was filmed there last year."

A spokeswoman for the cathedral said she was unable to comment on the filming due to confidentiality agreements.

It is the seventh time that the cathedral has been chosen as a major movie location.
